Gorsch

Based out of Japan's Iwate Prefecture, one of the northernmost provinces, Gorsch was born into a quiet rural life, taking inspiration from antique German tailoring and early proto-workwear. The garments are beautifully constructed, frequently making use of deadstock vintage textiles, with tailored silhouettes and unisex styling.

Gorsch's Fall/Winter 2024 styles are a continuation of the Spring/Summer collection, taking inspiration from the wardrobe and personal style of a local grape farmer, Mr. Sasaki, and his wife, Kanako. They run a small farm in Iwate's Shiwa District, growing grapes for white, red, and orange natural wines using what Gorsch refer to as "natural farming principles" - having purchased and restored an abandoned vineyard to produce naturally fermented wines.

With names like Bauer & Bauerin, both meaning "farmer" in German, the styles are understated - "simple" in appearance yet deceptively complex in execution. The rustic undertones in each piece's design help to balance the more formal silhouettes, creating elevated casual garments that fit easily into a winter wardrobe, whether you're in the country or the city: you'll look your absolute best.

This collection, like the previous one, is inspired by the attire of artists Ikuo Kikuchi and his wife Junko, who are based in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. The ideas for this collection are not only drawn from their personalities but also from their daily creative processes and works.
To explain a bit about the theme "無為(Mui)の人" in Buddhism, "Mui" refers to a state where things are left to their natural course. Although it sounds formal, I interpret it as facing oneself honestly, naturally, and spontaneously.
What one creates at that time is driven by such impulses. Even if it seems reckless from an outsider's perspective, it is something naturally led for that person. Thoughtful consideration is certainly involved, but acting with that impulse leads to personal experiences, and good works are born naturally from those experiences. Ikuo's works are the result of facing these impulses, which he might even consider as his 'mission.' I sense that power and express it through clothing, which is why I chose him as the theme.
However, without his wife's support, he couldn't create his works. She understands him and also engages in activities like making things and aromatherapy based on her interests. Talking with them excites me and directs my feelings towards creating clothes.
