Description
Based out of Japan's Iwate Prefecture, one of the northernmost provinces, Gorsch was born into a quiet rural life, taking inspiration from antique German tailoring and early proto-workwear. The garments are beautifully constructed, frequently making use of deadstock vintage textiles, with tailored silhouettes and unisex styling.
The Fall/Winter '25 collection takes inspiration primarily from two of the designer's friends, the artist Ikuko Kikuchi and her spouse, Junko Kikuchi. The cuts are exaggerated and billowing, with drape and movement prioritized for maximum comfort, and a really fantastic color palette that shows off the various fabrics.
The Wool Hemp Cape Coat is an extremely interesting silhouette that calls back to antique stagecoach jackets and capes, the precursors to the precursors to things like car coats. It's cut with a very wide, relaxed body, featuring a swooping shawl collar and robe-length lapels, with two hand pockets on the front and an internal strap for fastening the double-breasted placket. With an oversized fit, it's designed to be worn over other jackets or several bulky mid-layers, serving as a stylish shell to trap in heat and keep the elements out.
The standout feature is the cape detail, as the sleeves sit underneath an attached cape that buttons together on either side of the placket — when unbuttoned fully, the sleeves can be tucked further inwards and the cape actually functions more like a cape, allowing you to keep your arms and hands closer to your body.
The fabric was sourced from Ichinomiya, in Aichi Prefecture, an area historically known for its wool production and textile quality. Designed and produced by KONDO Wool, this custom weave fabric is extremely unique — using worsted wool threads for the warp, and splitting the weft yarns (hemp for the front weft, and worsted wool for the back) to create a tightly woven fabric with subtle irregularities throughout. It's soft and comfortable against bare skin, with great insulation and drape despite its more airy and lightweight feel.
True to size with a relaxed, oversized fit for layering. Dry clean or spot clean only.
