Online, we are only able to offer hems on jeans and trousers purchased directly from us. If you are interested in hemming pants from elsewhere, please inquire in-person at any of our three retail locations.

All of our hems are done in-house on restored Union Special chainstitch sewing machines, which sew at a very high tension to get a clean roping effect.

Our current hem turnaround is approximately one week (5-7 business days), on top of our regular shipment processing time of 1-3 business days.
If you need your hemmed pants more quickly, please select express shipping at checkout for a turnaround of 1-2 business days before shipping.

All hemmed jeans/trousers are non-returnable.
Chainstitch hemming for items purchased outside of S&S, and on fabrics heavier than 17oz is subject to additional charges.

The Machine.

Our chainstitch hemming service employs vintage Union Special chainstitch machines, which have been restored and maintained for our commercial use. These machines feature a heightened thread tension that will create the familiar and desirable "roping" effect around the hem over time—an iconic historical quirk.

Our In-House Tailor.

Our hemming services are conducted in-house by trained members of the S&S team. We're happy to help measure you for a hem in-store at any of our locations, but the actual hemming is only done in Berkeley and NYC currently. We do accept hems via mail, but this needs to be arranged with us first.
