11.11 is an exceptional label, with an ethos that strongly aligns with the S&S call to own fewer, better things — producing slow-fashion garments deliberately and sustainably across a network of local artisans and craftspeople throughout India. Everything they make is truly unique, with an undeniably natural and "human" element, from their patchwork and kantha embroidery, to the irregular nature of their low-tension handwoven textiles, to the tie-dye and natural indigo finishes, all of which will patina beautifully over time.
Another of 11.11's stellar home goods, the Indigo rug is made from a heavyweight handwoven Kala cotton, a wild organic cotton from India that is cultivated without any pesticides, fertilizers, or irrigation - growing perfectly fine on just rainwater and its own natural resistance to pests and disease.
It's finished with an indigo-block print that uses mud to resist-dye a pattern onto the surface of the weave. The indigo portions will wear down and gradually fade over time, growing lighter in color as the dye separates from the cotton yarns. The pattern is inspired by Mark Rothko paintings, and not unlike his art, is even more impressive in person - photos can never quite do it justice.
