Description
The WWII British Fearnought Duffle is part of the Real McCoy's two piece collaboration with the vintage military collector Saunder's Archive in Nova Scotia Canada. Based on examples from his collection, this coat is a faithful reproduction of the rare white, shawl collar, and white duffle coats that were widely issued to Air Raid Patrol and other civil defense workers in Britain during WWII.
Use of the duffle coat by the Royal Navy dates back to the 18th century. Longer, hooded, and brown duffle coats were widely worn by sailors and famously Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery. This shorter variation, while originally made for the military, saw widespread use amongst civil defense. After the war, many of these coats were surplussed out of military stocks and used by the likes of Mountain Rescue Teams and Soho Mods.
The duffle coat is made from a heavy "Fearnought" wool which was developed in the Mills of Northern England through a process of soaking, heating, and agitating the fibers to create a thick mat of durable weather-resistant fabric. The tell tale wooden toggles with rope closures were made to both allow ease of use while wearing heavy gloves and conformed to wartime metal rationing needs. The coat features two front patch pockets.
