Product details
Senui is a one-person operation, specializing in handmade shirts and shirt-jackets. Designed, run, and produced entirely by Hiroyuki Kato at a small workshop in Japan, the name Senui is taken from traditional kimono construction details - in Japanese, Senui means "backstitching", referring to the vertical seam that runs down the back of a proper kimono. Each Senui shirt is finished with a singular seam running down the back, as opposed to having multiple side seams, creating a much more elegant silhouette and gentle drape.
The Vintage Linen Shirt is an extremely elegant button up cut on the same pattern as Senui's Inside Pockets Shirt, with a relaxed fit and a curved placket. The chest and sleeves are breezy and open, with a clean front that has no pockets - there are pockets however, sewn into the inside of the shirt at each hip, and they're surprisingly large. Like other Senui shirts, it lacks any side seams, with only the placket itself and the singular back seam breaking up the construction of the body.
The hem is rounded, with small gusset reinforcements beneath the internal pockets, and the body itself is cut long enough to wear tucked in. Gathering at the cuffs creates a more dramatic silhouette through the arms, adding to the relaxed and slightly-oversized impression. It's sewn together with extremely precise, high stitch-per-inch single needle construction, a detail evocative of bespoke dress shirts and traditional European tailoring - the tonal buttons are slightly rounded throughout, with a pleasant depth and no sharp edges.
It's made from a textured deadstock Japanese linen fabric with a tightly woven face and medium-heavy weight. The drape is spectacular, extremely relaxed and fluid, and like any good linen it breathes exceptionally well and dries quickly in hot weather. The heft and density of the fabric resists wrinkling compared to other linen textiles, forming more natural creases over time in response to how its worn.
Fits true to size with a relaxed body. Wash cold and hang dry.
