The original USN Catapult Officer Jackets were issued on Aircraft Carriers during the second World War - these were brightly colored pullover smock parkas designed to help with visual clarity on deck.
After the war ended, like so many other styles, the Catapult Officer Jackets made their way into circulation in civilian markets through surplus and secondhand proliferation. From there, these jackets were modified on an individual basis, to suit the needs, taste, and abilities of each owner.
In the mid 1950s, 11 cooperating nations launched "Operation Deep Freeze", a series of research and exploratory missions around Antarctica under the leadership of the US Navy. Civilian scientists on these missions made ample use of modified Catapult Officer Jackets, commonly enhancing them with alterations like front zippers, and then stealing assets from whatever other garments they could - the hood was taken from the AL-1 jacket, and the M-1951 liner can be added for additional warmth.
The McCoy's reproduction features a napped cotton shell, with elasticated cuffs, a drawstring hem, two roomy front pockets, and a big warm hood with detachable trim and a full alpaca and wool pile lining inside - it's extremely plush, warm, and comfortable. Easy to layer over anything smaller than another parka, it has additionally internal buttonholes that can be used to attach a liner as well.
The body is made from a napped cotton fabric, with wool pile interlining and a nylon ripstop lining inside. It's got a #7 Brass Wire Front Zipper with cotton tape and brass eyelets with off-white cotton drawstrings for hardware, as well as tonal buttons around the hood. Inside, it's got custom woven labels, and everything is sewn together with 100% cotton threads.
