Since its founding 2001, designer Hiroki Nakamura's Visvim has built an extremely dedicated cult following. With a laser focus on crafting unique and high quality "future vintage" garments, Visvim has gained international acclaim over the past two decades for their unique perspective and exceptional design.
Not limited strictly to workwear or couture, they produce Folkwear, inspired by regional and historical manufacturing techniques from mud-dyeing to crocheting, with collections that build off of each previous year and develop holistically, season after season.
The Thorson is another of Visvim's absolutely outstanding reversible military jackets. Taking obvious inspiration from the nylon flight jackets of the 60s and 70s, it's got everything you'd expect - two snap hand pockets, a rib-knit hem and cuffs, two internal pockets, a heavy duty double-sided zipper, and a pen/cigarette/utility pocket on the sleeve. The collar is particularly thin and lightweight, for a clean silhouette that evokes "collarless" jackets and liners.
The fabric is where it really shines: you might have expected nylon, but Visvim felt that wool and silk would be superior. The "outer" face of the jacket (the navy colored fabric) is woven from a blend of 62% wool and 38% silk, with a cool and slightly structured hand as well as a gentle drape. The interior lining fabric is 100% silk, with all the flow and luster you'd expect.
The fit is slightly relaxed, with a roomy torso and dropped shoulders, but not so much as to exaggerate or alter the immediately recognizable flight jacket silhouette. We've only ordered one Thorson jacket, and it's in a size 3, which is somewhere around a medium for Visvim - check our measurements for the specifics.
