Description
Senui is a one-person operation, specializing in handmade shirts and shirt-jackets. Designed, run, and produced entirely by Hiroyuki Kato at a small workshop in Japan, the name Senui is taken from traditional kimono construction details - in Japanese, Senui means "backstitching", referring to the vertical seam that runs down the back of a proper kimono. Each Senui shirt is finished with a singular seam running down the back, as opposed to having multiple side seams, creating a much more elegant silhouette and gentle drape.
The Salt and Pepper Vest is inspired by vintage knit vests, with a fleeced interior and handsome combination of gray and navy yarns. Cut with a relaxed body, it has a simple V-neck collar, leather ball and toggle closure, a flat hem, and three pockets for storage (two for your hands and one more on the inside). It's got a relaxed and boxy silhouette, very traditional to the style's workwear roots.
The knit body uses twisted melange yarns that knit up into a sturdy and comfortable fabric that drapes easily and requires virtually no break-in, but still has enough natural shape and structure to maintain the boxy profile. The fleeced interior is soft and warm, with a short pile consisting entirely of the navy yarns for a more tonal design.
It's got precise single-needle construction throughout, a detail evocative of bespoke dress shirts and traditional European tailoring. Unlike Senui's shirts however, this vest does opt to use side seams in the construction, and lacks the singular back seam.
