This three way collaboration was a 4 year development, beginning in May 2018. Masterminded by Gen at S&S Oakland, it's the sum of countless months of sampling and refinement, playing to the strengths of both Indigofera & Simmons Bilt throughout every step of design and production. The goal was twofold — produce an all-leather Triple Pleat Blouse, and to create the very best fringe jacket we could.
Many of our other brands focused on reproductions have released leather and suede renditions of Type I, II, & III jackets with some regularity, but none have gone back to the earliest style of Levi's denim jacket: the 1880s Triple Pleat Blouse (unofficially referred to as "Type 0" jackets by vintage collectors). Our interpretation of the Triple Pleat Blouse is a hybrid design, fusing aspects of the original 1880’s jacket with a touch of 60’s flair. Specifically, we pay homage to the "OG" 1960's golden roughout Type III Jacket, with its contrasting black smoothout collar.
In order to achieve the desired final result, we brought Indigofera’s exceptional design & aesthetic together with Simmons Bilt’s expertise in leatherwork. Every aspect, from the shape of the pockets to the design of the labels was considered with agonizing intensity, as nobody involved was willing to settle for anything less than the absolute best.
The name "Rolling Thunder" refers specifically to the sound of the jacket's fringe rumbling in sync with a gallop while on horseback, mimicking the sound of distant thunder. Featuring the very best trims and opting not to omit a single detail, it's finished with custom metal hardware throughout (snaps and rivets), an old-school buckle back with deep pleats, two open bucket pockets with Indigofera's angled loop embroidery, and of course, fringe trim along the front and back yoke, shoulders, & sleeves.
It's made from a heavyweight cowhide suede from Morocco, dyed a rich whiskey brown color that will gradually fade to a more dusty tan over time from exposure to sunlight. Despite the heft and thickness of the leather, it's got a relaxed drape and quickly settles into the shape of the wearer's body, with an all-cotton lining from Scotland providing both structure and comfort. The collar is cut from a contrasting black tea core horsehide leather from Japan, giving the whole thing a bit more edge and making it very easy to pair with black leather shoes.
It's got an authentic fit that holds up remarkably well after over 100 years, with a slightly roomy torso and a "vintage" length that looks fantastic with higher-rise trousers. The sleeves are full and unrestrictive, with comfortable shoulders and roomy armholes that allow for full range of movement.
