MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of recreating, as opposed to just reproducing.
The Quartet Shirt is a really fantastic field shirt with a few details that make it one of our favorite pieces in recent memory. It's just the right blend of unique and understated, with loud details but such elevated execution - from the piped pockets and elbow patches to the elongated collar - that it can blend into an outfit as easily as it can stand out in one.
The fit is classic, with a relaxed torso and overshirt cut that layers well over tees or thermals. The collar features a hidden chinstrap closure, and the shoulders are internally reinforced with a woven fabric for extra durability and longevity. For utility, the front has four pretty obvious patch pockets, with snap closures and piped edges for aesthetics.
The fabric is a remarkably thick and sturdy wool knit, created with a special boucle yarn that has been given a unique shrinking finish, imbuing it with a felt-like texture. Being made from 100% wool yarns, it insulates very well, with a fleecy softness that completely lacks any scratchiness that some wools are known for. The heavy weight and knit construction pair nicely as well, providing the sturdiness and appearance of a woven fabric with the comfort and forgivingness of pajamas.
