Y'2 Leather was founded in 1998 by artisans with over 45 years of experience in the manufacturing of leather goods. Since then, they've been producing some of the very best and most unique leather products in all of Japan, working directly with tanneries to produce an exceptional lineup of high quality custom leathers to pair with each new style.

Their decades of knowledge collide with these custom leathers on the workshop floor, where Y'2 can blend vintage styles and techniques with modern sensibilities — creating familiar silhouettes in new and exciting materials. Their operation is relatively small, with an extremely impressive output both in terms of volume and quality for their limited scale and small crew - a brand punching well above their weight class.

An exclusive style for S&S, the Low Altitude MA-1 is based on a vintage jacket Jeremy once saw in a private collection of rare military apparel. The US Military never issued a leather version of the MA-1 jacket — debuting in 1949, the MA-1 was the first nylon body flight jacket. Affording greater mobility at the cost of reduced insulation when compared to shearling or alpaca lined jackets, it was a perfect fit for the warmer and tighter cockpits of new fighter jets being developed.

Our version recreates a "missing link" prototype between the final generation of sheepskin flight jackets and the first generation of synthetic ones, made from a plush black sheep leather on the an MA-1 body. Not suitable for the cold of high-atmosphere flight, a leather bomber like this would be worn exclusively for low altitude missions where temperatures are more agreeable, hence the name.

The sheep leather body is not a shearling leather, clocking in at 1.5mm thick, it's soft and supple with a tight grain texture and gentle shine throughout. Requiring almost no break in, it's got a heavyweight nylon lining through the body and sleeves, a nod to the original MA-1 jackets, and a nice bit of additional warmth & insulation. The collar, cuffs, and hem are all made from a knit wool ribbing with a dry texture that feels cool and comfortable on bare skin.

It's got all the classic details, from the two snap pockets on the front, to the nylon patch next to the placket (historically used as an area to clamp an oxygen tube to, for a flight mask), to the single sleeve pocket and shoulders without epaulettes. The front closes up with a heavy duty zipper that includes a tonal leather pull, covering an internal zipper shield that runs the length of the placket inside.

These run slightly small with a vintage style fit. Do not wash, dry or dry clean.
