Produced in Japan to the very highest quality, One Ear Brand Bandannas are designed by Jonathan Lukacek, with original art by Yurika Shinkai. Woven on shuttle looms from 100% cotton yarns, each bandanna measures approximately 70cm x 70cm (27.5" x 27.5" for us Americans) and features two selvedge sides and two folded & sewn sides.
Inspired by antique American "Plains Bandannas" from the late 1800s, the Ecossaise model was produced in collaboration from Ooe Yofukuten, featuring a unique design that is hand-printed onto each bandanna one at a time, rather than discharge printed like other modern bandannas.
Sharing a pattern with the Two Ears Brand Poem Bandanna, the print is first drafted in full before being broken down into individual layers - each layer is then painstakingly engraved onto a print cylinder by a master engraver one at a time. Each different color also requires its own cylinder, necessitating several different passes to achieve a detailed end result.
It's name, Ecossaise, comes from a type of folk dance music that was popular in Western Europe and the English Isles during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The combination of the detailed floral print, bright "turkey red" color, and large size inspired the name change from Poem Bandanna, as the finished product had a more lively and active impression than its predecessor.
The 70cm x 70cm size wears well as both a bandanna and a scarf, with the added versatility of featuring a single-sided print, letting you wear it backwards or "inside-out" for a more worn and faded aesthetic. Each bandanna features a custom One Ears Brand sticker, with a unique design depicting the Utsuro Bune, an urban legend from 1800s Japan about the discovery of a mysterious vessel.
