MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of recreating, as opposed to just reproducing.
The Oblique Trousers are a very covertly complicated garment, in that the more understated appearance hides the incredible tailoring details that they're just packed with. These are Motiv's take on an Eastern "Mien" fly construction, with a high rise, wide leg fit and two inverted pleats down the front for a relaxed and comfortable top block. The waistband is partially elasticated for comfort, securing with a wrapped front fly and integrated D-ring belt, with multiple buttons at the hip to accommodate for easy fit adjustments.
They've got a wide straight leg silhouette, with a nice big leg opening that compliments the roomy fit and snug waist. Paired with the fabric (more on that in a second), the overall garment is extremely elevated, a comfortable everyday trouser and a luxury relaxation pant all in one.
They're made from a tussah silk tweed fabric inspired by pre-industrial Chinese farmers' clothing. Tussah silk is sometimes also called wild silk, being sourced from the cocoons of wild silk moths that live in forests throughout India and Southeast Asia, rather than cultivated from domesticated silk worms in a farm. The silk tweed is produced using particularly thick and extra slubby yarns to achieve a more woolen hand, giving it a remarkably comfortable texture and fantastic drape.
They've got a noticeably dry texture, slight springiness to the weave that gives the fabric a very dynamic and fluid motion.
