Product details
MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of creating “recreations” rather than “reproductions”
The Oblique Shorts an a very covertly complicated garment, in that their understated appearance hides the incredible tailoring details that they're just packed with. These are Motiv's take on an Eastern "Mien" fly construction, with a high rise, wide leg fit and two inverted pleats down the front that remind one of gurkha shorts. The waistband is secured with a wrapped front fly and integrated D-ring belt, allowing these to adjust through the waist and comfortably fit a significant range across each size without ever looking too large or too small.
The very latest in Motiv's exploration into Tussah Silk fabrics, the new Chinese Tussah Silk herringbone is particularly luxurious, being woven without the usual neps characteristic of Tussah Silk. Tussah silk is sometimes also called wild silk, being sourced from the cocoons of wild silk moths that live in forests throughout parts of India and Southeast Asia, rather than cultivated from domesticated silk worms in a farm. The cocoons are processed one at a time, being sterilized in boiling water before they're individually stretched out over a form to separate the silk filaments.
Woven from extra long filaments, the fabric is finished and sewn up completely into a garment before being dyed a deep and rich aubergine color. With a cool and slightly dry hand, the herringbone weave is exactly as soft and breathable as you'd expect it to be, resulting in an outstanding comfortable fabric from the moment you put it on. It features a subtle luster and an extremely bouncy drape - it's one of the most fluid and unique fabrics we've ever encountered, moving easily and dramatically before snapping back into shape.
