Description
Clinch's Engineer Boots are easily their most iconic and popular style. Handsome right out the gate, they develop arguably the most sought-out engineer boots silhouette, as the heavy horsehide forms large, gentle rolls and the soft toe flattens down around the welt, creating an extremely sleek profile. The shape is recognizably distinct, with a dramatic heel cup and an exaggerated sloped logger heel, as well as a vertical crease down the center of the vamp, a historical detail and quirk of the lasting process for these boots.
This run is produced on Clinch's CN-WIDE last, our favorite fitting within their lineup, and the shape we believe to be most accomodating. It's got a comfortably roomy forefoot, with a fitted "waist" and a more snug heel — compared to some other engineer boots, the shaft is somewhat narrow, which can make these a bit challenging to get on and off, especially before the boots have broken-in when the leather is still very stiff. Over time, these will relax from wear, taking the shape of your foot as the leather properly breaks in.
The leather on these engineers is a thick, heavyweight horsebutt from Europe, hand-selected by Minoru himself for the right qualities of density and grain. This part is exceedingly important, as there is tremendous variation in quality in the supply of horsebutt, with less than 50% of the stock being suitable for Clinch boots. The hides are finished with a deep olive green overdye, and no-two boots or panels are the exact same color or shade — some are more vividly green, while others appear almost black at first. Over time, the green pigments will wear away, revealing the warm natural core underneath for one of the most unique and oustanding patinas on the market.
The rest of the materials are of equally high quality. Brass hardware, welts, and nails all come from Japan; the insole and midsole leathers come from the best tanneries in the world; and the outsoles are reproduction O'Sullivan's, custom-made just for Clinch.
The combination of carefully selected hides, atelier-style construction, and unique lasts creates a boot that is as close to a vintage heirloom as possible, but with all the advantages of modern materials.
