11.11 is an exceptional label, with an ethos that strongly aligns with the S&S call to own fewer, better things — producing slow-fashion garments deliberately and sustainably across a network of local artisans and craftspeople throughout India. Everything they make is truly unique, with an undeniably natural and "human" element, from their patchwork and kantha embroidery, to the irregular nature of their low-tension handwoven textiles, to the tie-dye and natural indigo finishes, all of which will patina beautifully over time.
The fabric used for this bandana is all "recycled", as the piece itself is made from a Kantha-stitched patchwork of off cuts and fabric scraps from other 11.11 pieces. By repurposing these trimmings into a new fabric, 11.11 employ waste-free design that makes sure all of their materials are used for something. Any remaining fibers, yarns, cuttings, or fluff are gathered, pulped, and pressed into handmade paper that 11.11 use for hang tags (among other things).
Kantha is a hand-stitching technique from India, not functionally dissimilar to sashiko or boro mending, that can be used to both repair and embellish fabric, as well as for quilting things together. 11.11's Kantha design uses curved panels and stitching meant to evoke ripples across a surface of water.
The Indigo Bandana from 11.11 strikes the perfect balance between scarf and bandana, just the right length to tie around your neck, but not large or dramatic enough to upset the delicate proportional balance of an outfit the way a chunky wool scarf might.
