Campus Jacket - Midnight Denim
Product details
The Campus Jacket is Mister Freedom's take on the iconic 1930s Cossack-collar blouse jacket. This edition is particularly notable, as it's the first non-leather Campus Jacket Mister Freedom have ever produced. You may think switching from leather to woven fabric is a simple change, but it presents all sort of issues: leather doesn't have edges that unravel if left unfinished, nor does it shrink when wet like cotton, or stretch the same way. To make this jacket out of denim instead of cowhide, significant modifications and adjustments needed to be made through all levels of production.
Falling into the category of early 1900s Sportswear, which basically translates to "any clothing that isn't workwear or formalwear", the Campus jacket is cut with a rounded Cossack-style collar, with two slash handwarmer pockets and a more vintage fit through the body (shorter and wider). Being made from such a heavy fabric, it starts out stiff and crunchy, before softening with wear and taking the shape of your body.
It's made from Japanese "Midnight" denim, a 16oz dark indigo warp and black weft selvedge denim that starts out dark and develops vivid, high contrast fades over time as both the black and indigo yarns lose dye. The pockets and gussets are trimmed with a double indigo NOS (new-old-stock) cotton twill, for a subtle contrast that will become more prominent over time. Everything closes up with big catseye corozo nut buttons, while the pockets and side tabs are trimmed with a black tea core leather.
The construction is no joke, with a one-piece back and a fully finished clean interior (and no lining). As such, you can expect this jacket to crock (bleed indigo dye) a LOT for the first little while, at least the first 3 or so washes, and probably even still for a bit after that - we recommend washing this alone or only with other indigo garments, and to be careful while wearing it with lighter colors.
Fits true to size. Wash cold with other indigo garments and hang dry.
