Buco J-31 Jacket
Product details
Founded in 1933 as the "Joseph Buegeleisen Co.” Buco were first specialists in motorcycle accessories and saddlebags. In 1947, they launched "Buco", a full apparel line with the slogan: “Motorcycle jackets, gloves, caps, belts and bags all cut and sewn by life long craftsmen dedicated to the task at hand”. The Real McCoy's acquired the license to produce the brand, and they have applied their usual diligence and attention to detail in producing Buco pieces.
All of the Real McCoy's flagship leather jackets are made at their headquarters in Kobe. Before sewing begins, the custom-tanned horsehide is cut very carefully to avoid thin or damaged areas as part of their obsessive quest to make a jacket that will last more than a lifetime. From the hand-cut horsehide pieces, one highly trained craftsman makes each jacket start-to-finish, moving from station to station with their work.
Originally debuting in 1949, the J-31 is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive and unique leather jackets ever produced for the consumer market. Sharing the J-100's band collar, as well as the asymmetrical double-breasted fit (and epaulets) of the J-24 - the primary inspiration for the J-31 actually came from aviation jackets of the time.
The body is a custom vegetable-tanned horsehide, developed by The Real McCoy's to exacting specifications & designed to look and age exactly like the leather used on the original Buco jackets. Tanned and finished at Japan's famous Shinki Hikaku, it features a pigment finish that will wear down over time, revealing the brown core of the leather.
It's cut pretty true to size, with a broad chest and wide shoulders. The extremely asymmetrical cut works best while closed up, sealing you in from the wind. Lining the jacket is a wool houndstooth plaid fabric - soft, warm, and great for layering. Two welted handwarmer pockets sit above the waist, and the front of the jacket is lined with two rows of decorative DOT snap buttons, giving the jacket its iconic look.
Fits true to size. Do not wash.
