Product details
Not looking to simply capture some portion of the market or to produce for the sake of producing, Indi + Ash create extremely thoughtful garments, employing a variety of traditional techniques and reinvesting profit into the artisans responsible for their production, as well as the communities they live in. From hand-weaving to hand-knitting to hand-embroidery, traditional dyeing methods, and atelier-style production, they work to create truly unique and beautiful pieces that highlight the skill and history of the craftspeople who make them.
The Andes Cardigan is knit manually, using a machine that requires no electricity to operate. The machines are operated by individuals, and each cardigan can take up to two weeks start to finish.
The pattern features a large shawl collar and two front bucket pockets for storage. The front and back yoke are knit up with a diamond cable stitch, and genuine horn buttons close the front. They're cut large, with a relaxed fit and elongated sleeves that are designed to be worn cuffed at the wrists, so the whole thing layers easily over shirts, flannels, and other knitwear.
The jet black Andes cardigan is a really remarkable garment, with much more going on than immediately meets the eye. Firstly, it's knit using 100% alpaca yarns, with no cotton or wool content - alpaca is the softer, warmer cousin of sheep's wool, much in the same way that pima cotton is the sturdier, more comfortable sibling of regular cotton. Secondly, it's entirely undyed, producing only with naturally jet black alpaca hairs and nothing else.
Getting enough high quality alpaca in a natural jet black is extremely difficult, making these cardigans limited in nature. The undyed nature of the yarns mean this is more colorfast than other black wools, and will retain its silky black tone for years and years. Additionally, it's also remarkably soft and comfortable against bare skin, making it an extremely worthwhile investment. Over time, the yarn will relax, and the garment will open up, increasing in size by about 10%.
True to size with a relaxed fit throughout. Dry clean only at a wool/knit specialist.
