Description
MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of creating “recreations” rather than “reproductions”
Taking inspiration from European military surplus, specifically French and Italian cargo pants, Motiv's Adjustable Cargo pants feature a breezy fit with anatomically slanted cargo pockets and drawstrings at the waist and hem. Cut with a high rise and very full legs, there's plenty of space to move around in, with great airflow from the billowy silk fabric.
The waistband is cut oversized, and is designed to be taken in with the attached waistband - beneath that, the fly features adjustable snaps that can be secured more tightly or loosely depending on how much adjustment is needed through the waist. Because of the oversized fit and adjustable waist, each size will fit a wide range of people, accommodating about 3" +/- the waistband in either direction.
These are made from a high twist Tussah silk twill, sourced from one of the last remaining mills in China that exclusively produces tussah silk. Tussah silk is sometimes also called wild silk, being sourced from the cocoons of wild silk moths that live in forests throughout India and Southeast Asia, rather than cultivated from domesticated silk worms in a farm. The high twist yarns retain a crisp, dry hand that evokes the texture of old parachute fabrics while remaining lightweight and breathable.
Featuring a gentle shine and extremely springy drape, it's one of the most fluid and unique fabrics we've ever encountered, moving easily and dramatically before snapping back into shape. It's been finished with a one wash treatment, helping to soften and shrink the fabric - this also means the fabric is machine-washable, taking these from "extravagant luxury item" to "everyday summer uniform".
