Nigel Cabourn needs very little introduction, but deserves one nonetheless: having over 50 years experience designing and working in the menswear industry, with multiple decades-old brands and international stores with cult followings under his belt. His eponymous brand has a focus on practical and hard-wearing textiles from vintage workwear, producing inspired takes on classic military apparel from the last century.
The 40s denim jacket is a fun reinterpretation of a workwear classic, borrowing and reimagining a few very unique and obscure historical details. Early zippers, unlike our fancy modern ones, lacked a hook to prevent them from unzipping when closed, requiring buttons or clasps at the top and bottom of the zipper to keep it securely closed — after some time, zippers were updated with hooks that allowed them to "lock" closed, preventing them from opening on their own, and removing the need for stabilization via button.
This jacket closes up with a vintage hookless zipper, and includes those same stabilizer buttons at the top and bottom of the placket, surrounding the zipper. The silhouette is otherwise a riff on the classic type-1 denim jacket, with a dropped yoke, short torso, and double-pleated front — the back also features deep pleats, with a buckle-back for adjusting the fit and a funky extra pocket on the back-right.
It's made from a 100% cotton 12.5oz indigo selvedge denim with a slightly uneven texture and a rinsed finish. Over time, the jacket will continue to fade as a result of wear and washing, developing a unique patina depending on how its worn.
