From his quiet workshop in Queens, New York, Andrew McAteer produces exceptional leather goods by hand, the old way. A 5th-generation New Yorker, Andrew has always had an appreciate for traditional craftsmanship, having worked as a carpenter and furniture maker before turning to leatherwork.
Everything is made slowly, by one person (Andrew). His lasts are custom developed, hand-whittled to shape by Andrew - with each subsequent pair of footwear being hand-lasted to his custom fittings. Plus, like any good pair of shoes, these can be fully rebuilt by a trusted and capable cobbler whenever the soles wear down.
One of his flagship styles, the Handsewn Loafer is a classic casual penny loafer, with just a little bit of visual heft to it. It can be easily dressed up or down, and looks exceedingly good with pretty much any and all denim. Wear them with socks for a more trad look, or go without for something a bit more relaxed.
They're made from an all natural (undyed) veg tan cowhide leather. Like all of our favorite veg tans, over time, the leather will soften considerably, breaking in and acquiring a handsome patina in line with how they're worn. The face of the leather will darken considerably from light, moisture, oils, and anything else they come into contact with, getting better and better with wear.
The (very few) trims have been expertly selected: from the all-white tonal stitching to the undyed welt and stamped insole - but our favorite has to be the natural latex outsole and heel, from Lactae Hevea in France. Exceedingly comfortable, it's a unique blend of support, traction, and durability that also looks great with the undyed leather uppers.
Fits true to Brannock size, available only in whole sizes. If you are between sizes, we recommend taking the closest size up (so an 8.5 Brannock would take a size 9) and then adding an insole or wearing thick socks.
