MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of recreating, as opposed to just reproducing.
The Pilgrimage Hoodie is an elevated full-zip knit with a deep modular hood and tonal leather trims. The extra large hood features vintage leather trim details, and is cut so as to lay flatteringly as a shawl collar when open, a stand collar while mostly zipped, and as a hood while fully zipped closed. There are two welted front pockets as well, so you have that extra bit of space for your hands, keys, or third thing.
With a relaxed fit through the body, the hem is flat and trimmed with reinforcing leather, cutting more of a jacket silhouette (as opposed to a ribbed-knit like other knit hoodies). The back and shoulders feature a meticulous raglan construction for maximum comfort and ease of motion, and the sleeves end in ribbed cuffs that hug your wrist and create a nice contrast to the roomy sleeves.
The fabric is a remarkably thick and sturdy wool knit, created with a special boucle yarn that has been given a unique shrinking finish, imbuing it with a felt-like texture. Being made from 100% wool yarns, it insulates very well, with a fleecy softness that completely lacks any scratchiness that some wools are known for. The heavy weight and knit construction pair nicely as well, providing the sturdiness and appearance of a woven fabric with the comfort and forgivingness of pajamas.
