Product details
Established in the mid-1930s, Yoshida & Co are among the best-known bag making companies in the world. Their PORTER line, named for the luggage-carrying profession of porters, is among their most popular, gaining international renown and recognition during the 1980s, and maintaining a cult status since then. Their bags are remarkable, all original designs, produced with custom textiles and hardware that will only get better with age.
PORTER's Luggage Label / OldNew collection is a limited release of Kakishibu-dyed nylon bags with patinated trims and beautiful tonal variety. Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese dying technique that uses aged persimmon tannins, with "Kakishibu" literally meaning "persimmon astringency". Kakishibu has also been called “Taiyo-zome (sun-dye)” due to the photosensitivity of the dye - areas exposed to light will grow darker and richer in tone, eventually reaching a true persimmon color.
The Luggage Label / OldNew line features two different nylon finishes, "Kakishibu-zome", an orange/tan finish developed by soaking a white bag in persimmon juice and sun-drying it, and "Kure-zome", which modifies the persimmon dye by adding iron to the mixture, producing a warm charcoal/black color. As a result of the sun-drying and natural dyes used, the finished bags have a weathered texture that will continue to fade and patina over time.
The Rucksack bag is a mountaineer-style backpack with vintage inspirations. It's got a large central pocket that closes with a flap and drawstring, as well as two bulky side pockets with flaps for protection. The nylon straps for the shoulders and top flap are all adjustable, so you can customize your fit to how much weight and bulk you're carrying.
