Description
MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of recreating, as opposed to just reproducing.
The Gilet Jacket is an extremely clean, no-frills leather jacket with a very elegant, tailored design. It features a unique "grown-on" funnel-neck collar that flows directly up from the shoulders without any seams to break up the silhouette. Inside, the body has a completely clean construction, with piped seams and an unlined torso. It's got two flap pockets for your hands, with a gently-curved bottom hem for a clean silhouette that lands somewhere between a cafe racer and sci-fi space jacket from the future.
It's made from a buffalo calfskin, developed in collaboration between MotivMFG and the Chinese tannery Highland Yak. It's a robust yet remarkably comfortable leather, with a finished roughout side and plush, textured grain side with a gentle glaze. The dark espresso brown body has a lot of tonal depth, with a short nap that catches light beautifully and feels pretty nice to touch as well.
It's got some great extra details, too, from the concealed button cuffs at the end of the sleeves (for a clean arm shape), to the heavy duty two-way Riri zipper that closes up the front. The back features two small vents for extra ease of movement, and to prevent things from bunching improperly when seated.
Fits true to size. Do not wash or dry, it's made of leather.
