Description
Run by designer Daniel Olatunji, Monad London produces beautiful handmade garments with a unique blend of precise tailoring and what Daniel calls meticulous imperfection. A graduate of Central Saint Martins in London, Daniel's pursuit of perfection lead him full circle, now embracing a very natural chaos in his details — raw edges, mismatched buttons, aged fabrics, and hand stitching contrast & compliment the immaculate construction of each piece.
The same approach is taken with their materials, seeking out handwoven or deadstock textiles from artisan makers and antique dealers, selecting only the very best and most interesting fabrics for each new style. The designs are inspired by what we'd call "working wear" — shirts, trousers, and even suits made from hardy materials and worn by blue collar workers through the middle of the 20th century. These pieces were lived in by the people who wore them, developing a unique character over time that Monad London manage to reproduce and reimagine.
The Collarless Rouach Jacket is a unique blend of workwear and tailoring, with a cropped and casual fit that layers easily and sits comfortably thanks to the adjustable double-zip placket. It's got three external pockets and none on the inside, which is honestly fine, as the two hand pockets are sufficiently voluminous, and the single chest pocket buttons closed. The collarless design features raw edges and full-length sleeves with adjustable cuffs, and the entire garment is lined through the arms and body.
It's made from a mud-dyed and handloomed tussah silk jacquard fabric, which is a lot to explain. Tussah silk is also called wild silk, and comes from the cocoons of wild silk moths that live in forests throughout India and Southeast Asia, rather than from domesticated silk worms on a farm. After harvest, this particular fabric is woven by artisans in China's Guangdong Province, a practice traced back to the Ming Dynasty. The mud-dyeing process uses a specific soil from the Pearl River Delta, taking several months to complete and varying slightly year-to-year.
Smooth, dry, and luxurious feeling, the jacquard weave features a square pattern throughout, with highly varied textures and irregularities across its surface. The front closes up with a two-way antique brass zipper, and the buttons at the chest and cuffs are intentionally mismatched.
