MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of creating “recreations” rather than “reproductions”
The latest iteration of Motiv's stellar button down shirts takes inspiration by the dress shirts worn by androgynous icon Ruth von Morgen in the 1930s. It's cut with a one-piece stand and fall collar, with hidden buttons and beautifully pointed tips and a handsome profile. The tailoring emphasizes ease of movement, with a relaxed chest and gathering across the back.
These are made from a Japanese cotton/hemp fabric with a slightly open weave that's perfect for warmer weather. The 15% hemp content helps the soft cotton breathe better, pairing well with the light weight of the fabric to make these ideal for hot days.
It's got exceptionally details too, from the tonal buttons, to the rounded single chest pocket, to the angular seam reinforcements at the gussets on the hem. Speaking of the hem - it's long and rounded, perfect for wearing tucked in to your favorite pants or trousers.
Fits true to size. Wash cold, hang dry.
