MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of recreating, as opposed to just reproducing.
Inspired by (but expanding upon) vintage French military jackets, the DB Shawl Collar Sack jacket does a little of everything - it can be casual, you can dress it up, and it's comfortable & utilitarian enough to wear regularly. Really straddling the border between chore jacket and smoking jacket, it does either look quite well, with a simple but properly tailored and anatomical fit that can be styled multiple ways thanks to the upper collar fastening and double-breasted design.
With a fairly standard, true to size shape, it's slightly shorter through the torso, pairing best with higher rise pants (like the matching silk Oblique Trousers). The body is relaxed, with a roomy chest and flat hem that compliments the 4x1 button stance on the front.
Its made from a tussah silk tweed fabric inspired by pre-industrial Chinese farmers' outfits. Tussah silk is sometimes also called wild silk, being sourced from the cocoons of wild silk moths that live in forests throughout India and Southeast Asia, rather than cultivated from domesticated silk worms in a farm. The silk tweed is produced using particularly thick and extra slubby yarns to achieve a more woolen hand, giving it a remarkably comfortable texture and fantastic drape.
Its got a noticeably dry texture, slight springiness to the weave that gives the fabric a very dynamic and fluid motion.
