Description
The WWII Engineer Coat is based on early 1940s era work jackets, whose design was strongly influenced by wartime restrictions and rations on materials, which mandated changes to previous standards and construction techniques. These garments used standard issue hardware, in this case laurel leaf donut buttons, with two-row stitching at the seams instead of three, and bartacks at stress points in place of rivets. The two chest pockets lack any sort of flap or covering either, with a period-accurate "messy" shoulder seam (this is intentional and not a defect).
It's cut with a relaxed body, featuring a roomy chest and an fairly standard jacket length that's neither cropped nor long, but maybe leans 10% closer to cropped than the other direction. The sleeves are roomy, with button cuffs at each end that can be turned up as well, and a four button-placket closes up the front of the jacket. The right pocket is just a standard square with an open top, while the left pocket is half side-entry and features a pen/pencil slot — while side entry pockets are less common, we find they make for the perfect storage space to stow your keys or small headphones.
The fabric is a 10oz, 100% cotton, gray-weft-indigo selvedge denim from Japan with a fairly stiff hand that will relax and soften considerably over time. McCoy's denim is all completely custom, developed and produced in-house to best recreate vintage samples from their archives, and generally starts out quite raw and rigid, with a slow break-in and even slower fading process. In our experience, it's also some of the most rewarding denim to stick with, becoming more comfortable than you'd ever expect after handling it new, and developing some of the best fades of any denim we've encountered.
These fit true to size after a wash. They're cut large and will shrink to size upon washing. Wash cold and hang dry.
