Description

Easily one of the most iconic and enduring military boots of the last 100 years, the USN N-1 Field Shoe (aka the "Boondocker") has finally hit the Lofgren lineup, with a new rendition featuring their team's usual outstanding construction. Built on a reproduction of the original N-1 last, these differ from the (similar-looking) M-43 Boots that have long graced their catalog: specifically through the silhouette, with a much less chunky shape than the Munson Last of the M-43s.

Chromexcel cowhide an extremely sturdy and handsome leather that only gets better and better with time. These are made from full grain natural CXL roughout — the reverse (or "suede") side of the usual CXL cowhide. Like the smooth finish, the roughout is an extremely dynamic leather that's been finished without any sort of dye applied. The light tan roughout patinas quickly and dramatically, wearing down in some areas, and taking on color from light, moisture, and whatever you may end up walking through. Individual panels across the boots may begin as different hues of brown or tan, and will settle into a more uniform color with time and wear.

As far as leather goes, it's thick and sturdy, starting out noticeably stiff and requiring a few weeks of good wear to really break-in. After that, the leather begins to relax considerably, moulding to take the shape of the wearer's foot and softening at flex points to move more easily.

John Lofgren set out to make the ultimate version of this boot from the very best components — from Mil-spec painted eyelets custom to the reproduction WWII-style outsole. It's finished with a 270 degree Goodyear flat welt that can be rebuilt after wear by any trusted cobbler.
