Founded in 2011 out of a desire to create higher quality and better looking clothing for hiking, camping, and mountaineering, And Wander is lead by designers Keita Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori, who previously worked together at ISSEY MIYAKE. Initially launching as a menswear label, they've since expanded their sizing to include women's and unisex offerings as well.
The styles range from the more casual to the most hardcore technical apparel you can find, with each garment including an illustration of 1-3 mountains on the tag that denote its overall "field level" of performance. Pieces with only one mountain are suitable for everything from the city to the campground, two mountains work for more intense hikes and outings, & styles with three mountains are equipped for the most serious inclement weather and seasonal intensity.
Designed for some serious wear, the Taffeta Hiker 2way Pants are two pairs of pants in one - the no-nonsense adult version of the zip off shorts you might have worn as a kid. They have almost too many details to list, from the woven belt, to the double knee pleats, to the color-coded zippers in the middle of the leg (to avoid confusion when reattaching the legs), as well as a dozen other unique features (see our bullet points below).
They've got a comfortable medium rise and slightly tapered fit that can be accentuated with the elasticated drawstrings at each hem, but that's completely optional. The lower leg sections also feature vertical zippers that extend their full length, allowing you remove the lower legs without removing your shoes, or to just widen the fit and introduce a bit more airflow.
The fabric is a lightweight 100% nylon taffeta with resistance to both water and UV rays. It's exceptionally durable in spite of its minimal heft and thickness, with double needle stitching and bar tack reinforcements throughout, as well as mesh trims along the pockets and inside the top block.
These fit true to size with an adjustable waistband. Wash cold and hang dry.
