Product details
Japan's Y'2 Leather was founded in 1998, by artisans with over 45 years of experience in the manufacturing of leather goods. Since then, they've been producing some of the very best and most unique leather products in all of Japan, working directly with tanneries to produce unusual, fully custom leathers of the highest quality to pair with each new style.
Their decades of knowledge collide with these custom leathers on the workshop floor, where Y'2 can blend vintage styles and techniques with modern sensibilities - creating familiar silhouettes in new and exciting materials. Their operation is relatively small, with an extremely impressive output both in terms of volume and quality for their limited scale and small crew - a brand punching well above their weight class.
Y'2 also make some pretty exceptional accessories: case in point, this horsehide mailman-style shoulder bag. With riveted reinforcements, a cotton lining, and a sturdy flap cover, it's an extremely handsome every day bag, with an adjustable strap and a snap closure inside.
Dyeing leather with indigo is actually quite a difficult process, it's something that's easy to get not quite right, and even easier to mess up completely. The tannery that developed this rich and consistent indigo dye came upon the recipe after years of trial and error. As the process to dye horsehide is very different from the process of dying cotton, you can expect this indigo leather to act a bit differently over time than your favorite pair of jeans.
Over time, the horsehide will lighten up in areas of high wear, fading to a lighter shade of blue. Don't go expecting this thing to ever go hot blue though, the color will remain mostly consistent throughout, as the dye has a much more stable bond with the leather than it ever forms with a cotton thread. You also won't have to worry about accidentally getting indigo all over things, which is a plus for sure.
