Description
Prequel is a modern brand working on historically-adjacent recreations. Using antique textile manuals & catalogs to recreate woven fabrics and patterns from the past, their designs take old-school silhouettes and bring them into contemporary life, updating the fit and shape to work in a more modern world. The end products aren't reproductions, but instead updates to classic styles that have only gotten harder and harder to find.
In the second half of 2026, Prequel offered "SHOP CUSTOM" shirts, where familiar silhouettes from their lineup were offered in wide variety of fabrics — far more than their ready-to-wear collection. This specific shirt (style + fabric) was selected by Gen, our head buyer and the manager at our Berkeley shop (among other titles and responsibilities), and was produced in limited amounts exclusively for S&S. No other store anywhere has this exact model of Prequel shirt.
The Open Collar Shirt is a comfortable and casual button up shirt with a fantastic fit and really classic details. It's got a spread camp collar, as the name would suggest, with a hidden button and loop that allow you to wear it closed if needed, a relaxed fit through the chest, a single pocket, and a casual flat hem. Not too old-school in the fit, it's long enough to wear either tucked-in or unctucked, looking flattering and natural either way.
The fabric is much more complex that you might realize at a glance, reproduced from a 100-year-old sample, it's a tonal blue jacquard with a detailed check pattern throughout. Jacquard fabrics have their designs/patterns woven into the fabric rather than being printed on, making for highly-intricate and beautiful textiles that don't lose their detail over time. Made with 100% cotton yarns, it clocks in at a comfortable 7.5oz, and really deserves close inspection, as the level of detail in each stripe is really exceptional. Slightly stiff at first, the fabric will soften up very quickly, taking the shape of the wearer and draping comfortably.
