MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques from around the world inform their designs, with the goal of recreating, as opposed to just reproducing.
The Radium Down Jacket takes its inspiration from early iterations of high altitude flight jackets, somewhere between a down puffer jacket and a classic bomber, it features a unique radiant quilting pattern and a large stand collar. The design is ergonomic, with wool "cut-outs" at high movement areas like the elbow that allow for greater ease of motion. It's packed with details otherwise, from the zip pockets and covered snap placket, to the curved hem and modified knit cuffs, a lot of utility is packed into an already very stylish garment.
The fabric is a completely custom waxed cotton, developed exclusively for MotivMFG by Halley Stevenson in the UK, it's medium-weight, with a large ripstop grid texture and excellent water resistance. Redesigned for the 2024 season, the latest run of the waxed cotton material features a high contrast coating, selected specifically for the dramatic patina it develops quickly with wear.
It's got a classic flight jacket fit, with a relaxed and slightly cropped torso, full sleeves, and a large convertible collar. The front placket closes up with a double zipper, but also features an internal snap placket behind that to help block wind. The padding is filled with 200gsm duck down for insulation, and the inside is lined with a complex combination of wool, cool, and bemberg trims — including an elasticated internal hook belt system for additional security and insulation.
