Description
MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of recreating, as opposed to just reproducing.
The Platica Peacoat is named after the Romanian word for "Halibut" - the flat, asymmetrical fish being a fitting inspiration for this updated peacoat silhouette. Using the Romanian word for halibut is further contextualized through the design of the collar and lapels, which were inspired by mid-century Romanian styles. Featuring a recognizable peacoat silhouette, the whole thing has been streamlined, with a covered placket that keeps all the buttons on only one half of the jacket, a detail borrowed from vintage WWII submariner coats.
It's cut with a relaxed fit through the body, sitting at a classic 3/4 length with a smooth tonal lyocell lining that Motiv have quilted for comfort and additional insulation around the sleeves. The covered placket can be worn fastened single-breasted or double-breasted, and features two roomy external handwarmer pockets and two more pockets on the inside.
Made from an incredible 100% wool velour overcoating fabric, inspired by vintage Winter outerwear. Woven by Mallalieus Mills in the UK, it's woven from short pile wool and cut into a subtle herringbone pattern - originally a popular material for use in overcoating, it's an extremely rare fabric on the modern market. This contemporary production features improvements to the weave, imbuing the cloth with more mechanical stretch that allows for easier tailoring, and further improves comfort.
Heavy and soft, it does everything a high quality wool fabric should - it's warm, with great thermal regulation, moisture-wicking, and a very handsome drape. Everything closes up with tonal buttons (hidden), and the neck features a chinstrap collar that can either be stowed beneath the collar itself or fastened around the front for maximum warmth.
