Description
GRÅBRODERN is a Swedish brand named with a Swedish word. Our best attempt at pronouncing it sounds something like "Groh-brud-urn," which isn't quite correct, but could probably be worse. The word translates to mean "gray brother," or "friar dressed in gray," but also refers to a neighborhood in the medieval town of Visby, on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. This is where the brand takes its inspiration, blending contemporary Japanese takes on Americana with traditional Baltic workwear.
The Norrgårde Jacket is a very unique and old-school workwear style. Taking inspiration from vintage Gotlandic working jackets, it features a silhouette unlike most other denim jackets, with a band collar and asymmetrical placket. Somewhere between a relaxed and an athletic fit, it's roomy through the chest and yoke, with a relaxed torso and t-shaped back, featuring comfortably wide sleeves and dropped-shoulders. The body comes in at the waist and cuffs, using multiple pleats to taper the fit into something much more snug, creating a more dramatic and emphasized shape for the wearer.
It's made from an unwashed 11.5oz "plain" Japanese selvedge denim, with a smooth hand and consistent weave quality. Though it's unwashed, the fabric is sanforized, meaning it has been treated for most shrinkage, and should stay relatively stable after washing (though it may still come in a bit depending on how you wash and dry). Over time, this classic indigo denim will fade and soften further, developing a unique patina for each different wearer.
The little things are also worth mentioning here: from the selvedge trim details up the back of the jacket and inside the hem & cuffs, to the fully-single-needle stitching construction, to the custom Gråbrodern metal buttons, nothing has been skipped over or phoned-in. Also, there's a surprisingly-roomy pocket on the chest, perfect for a small wallet or your keys, with a button to secure it closed.
These run very large. We suggest most folks size down from their usual jacket size. Wash cold and hang dry.
