Run by designer Daniel Olatunji, Monad London produces beautiful handmade garments with a unique blend of precise tailoring and what Daniel calls meticulous imperfection. A graduate of Central Saint Martins in London, Daniel's pursuit of perfection lead him full circle, now embracing a very natural chaos in his details — raw edges, mismatched buttons, aged fabrics, and hand stitching contrast & compliment the immaculate construction of each piece.
The same approach is taken with their materials, seeking out handwoven or deadstock textiles from artisan makers and antique dealers, selecting only the very best and most interesting fabrics for each new style. The designs are inspired by what we'd call "working wear" — shirts, trousers, and even suits made from hardy materials and worn by blue collar workers through the middle of the 20th century. These pieces were lived in by the people who wore them, developing a unique character over time that Monad London manage to reproduce and reimagine.
The Gray Shirt takes inspiration from classical Naval apparel, with an exaggerated sailor's collar and a design that calls back to nautical uniforms and early military apparel. This more-playful take on the Sailor Shirt features an exaggerated collar and a more cropped fit through the torso, with a single chest pocket and relaxed sleeves.
It's made from 100% Nigerian cotton — grown, spun, and handwoven by the Fulani Tribesmen in the North of Nigeria. The weaving is done on a 25" strip-weave horizontal loom that was hand built with local materials, which produces a low-tension fabric with plenty of subtle & unique irregularities throughout. This method of fabric creation hasn't really changed in the last 600 years, and makes for a remarkably soft and sturdy textile.
