Based out of Japan's Iwate Prefecture, one of the northernmost provinces, Gorsch was born into a quiet rural life, taking inspiration from antique German tailoring and early proto-workwear. The garments are beautifully constructed, frequently making use of deadstock vintage textiles, with tailored silhouettes and unisex styling.
Gorsch's Spring/Summer 2024 Collection is their 12th seasonal release, and takes inspiration from the wardrobe and personal style of a local grape farmer, Mr. Sasaki, and his wife, Kanako. They run a small farm in Iwate's Shiwa District, growing grapes for white, red, and orange natural wines using what Gorsch refer to as "natural farming principles" - having purchased and restored an abandoned vineyard to produce naturally fermented wines.
With names like Bauer & Bauerin, both meaning "farmer" in German, the styles are understated - "simple" in appearance yet deceptively complex in execution. The rustic undertones in each piece's design help to balance the more formal silhouettes, creating elevated casual garments that fit easily into a summer wardrobe, whether you're on the farm laboring, or sharing a bottle of something with friends: you'll look your absolute best.
The Field Jacket was designed as a piece of more conventional workwear, with a hooded fit and four large 3D external pockets. Featuring two sets of drawstrings to adjust the fit, the hood is uniquely constructed and can be worn down as a more standard collar as well. The covered placket with zip & button combo as well as the flap coverings for the pocket were designed to keep rain and moisture out, complimenting the deep, multi-piece hood.
It's made from Gorsch's "Weather Wool" a wool/linen fabric with all the best features of both fibers that make it up. Woven at a slightly low tension, the wool yarns are brushed for softness, helping to minimize the linen content's wrinkling without eliminating the subtle sheen present across its face. It's given a final rinse after finishing as well, helping relax the fibers further and emphasizing some of the unique textural irregularities throughout.
An excellent garment and fabric for warmer weather, it features a partial buggy lining through the body, with tonal hardware and custom woven labels. Over time, the already exceptional fabric will continue to break in, developing a unique and "authentic" patina throughout.
