MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of creating “recreations” rather than “reproductions”
This is Motiv's homage to the classic button down, drafted off of instructions from the 1950s. The body is cut wide and roomy, while the armholes are more deliberately fitted, with gathering across the back yoke for ease of movement. The one piece "stand-and-fall" button down collar uses hidden tabs for a clean finish, highlighting its generous cut and elegant shape.
This exceptional shirting fabric is woven with a blend of 70% cotton and 30% silk yarns, inspired by luxury silk men's shirts from the early 20th century. Finished as a lightweight poplin fabric, the silk yarns are tightly twisted to a high density before being stabilized with cotton - the end result is a handsome shirt that will develop the more characteristic luster and sheen of silk over time as a result of wear.
It's breezy and comfortable right away, and will only soften further as the cotton breaks in and relaxes into a more natural drape. The cotton blend also structures the silk enough to allow for machine washing, but we advise only using cold water, and still hanging to dry to best preserve the garment.
The details are great too, from the tonal buttons, to the rounded single chest pocket, to the angular seam reinforcements at the gussets on the hem. Speaking of the hem - it's long and rounded, perfect for wearing tucked in to your favorite pants or trousers, but still elegant and handsome if worn untucked.
