Description
Wonder Looper was founded by industry veterans Risa Saito and Bazad Trinos of Naked & Famous denim (among other projects). With a focus on knitwear, they produce some of the best contemporary cotton knits on the market, manufacturing all of their products entirely in Japan from start to finish. Their pieces are a stellar blend of interesting, unique fabrics and high quality vintage construction details, with excellent fits that lean more true-to-size for Western audiences as well.
The ELS Recycled Cotton Tees are as outstanding as the rest of Wonder Looper's lineup. They're made with a blend of recycled cotton from yarn-spinning factories, recycled off-cuts from Wonder Looper's Double Heavyweight tees, and premium extra long staple organic cotton that is spun together and then knit up into a soft, airy, and low-tension fabric. Featuring a thick ribbed collar, it's got a modern fit, not too long or short through the body, with a very true chest and shoulders.
As the name suggests, they've got a slightly uneven and slubby surface texture, with an immediately soft hand that feels great on skin and drapes easily. It's a near perfect tee weight, substantial and plush without feeling stiff or heavy, and easy to wear and layer almost all year long.
This batch is extra special, featuring a hand-dyed finish using natural botanical and mud-based dyes on Japan's Amami island. Amami island is the native home of the Sharinbai tree, which has long been used on the Island in botanical dyeing, as the bark and wood of the tree produce a rosy reddish-pink-brown color in fabrics over multiple exposures. Amami is also host to particularly iron-rich soils, resulting in an island mud that can also be used to dye fabrics black. This tee combines both of those techniques, with Sharinbai tree dye and mud dye on Amami island by local artisans to achieve the uniquely natural and uneven earthy brown color.
