We have been working with Ryo and Hiro Ooe of Ooe Yofukuten since 2014, and are their sole stockist outside of Japan. They make everything in a small Japanese town just outside of Nagoya using a collection of rare vintage sewing machines. Ryo is the pattern maker and cutter and Hiro does the sewing - their dedication, focus and level of detail is superlative.
Their workshop is in a textile factory building from the 1890’s, filled with restored vintage and antique sewing machines. These exceedingly rare and unique machines are lovingly maintained by their close friend, Mr. Matsuoka, who is nationally recognized by Japan for his sewing machine repair skills.
The production is very limited by nature, and they have developed an international cult following over the years. When you hold a pair of Ooe Yofukuten jeans, it may take a moment to notice the subtle details. The fabric is just like a pair of vintage Levi’s, the needlework is flawless, and the buttonholes are absolute perfection - each a mark of the craft of Ryo and Hiro.
These are Ooe's newest fit, the Lot S03XX jeans - they're a high rise, wide straight leg with essentially no taper at all, inspired by WWII-era jeans from the 1940s. They've got a classic five pocket configuration, with a custom button fly and copper rivet reinforcements that Ooe have precisely matched to original samples in their archives. Also like the jeans that inspired them, they feature olive drab HBT pocket bags, and all yellow thread throughout.
These are made from the second batch of Ooe's XX4 denim - the product of years upon years of research, it's are a 13.5oz, 100% cotton, 7x7 selvedge denim with a white ID and indigo dye. Woven at a small mill nearby to Ooe in Japan, it's produced on vintage looms, to Ooe's exact specifications and exclusively for their use. The warp threads are dyed with a green-cast indigo, specifically chosen to age like sample fabrics from the 1940s - with gray weft threads selected for the same purpose. Slightly hairy and surprisingly soft (even while raw) these are a comfortable mid-weight fabric that is expected to develop even, vintage-style fades, and can be worn almost year-round.
This round of XX4 denim features a subtly different indigo cast than the first batch, which Ooe have designated as "Dull" XX4. This newer run, despite being woven and produced to the same specification as the first, came out slightly darker, with a deeper blue hue and more visible green undertones. We expect this "Dull" denim to age differently than the original XX4 fabric, with a generally slower fading process. Ooe themselves were thrilled with this inconsistency, as it mirrored (quite amusingly) the historical inconsistencies and irregularities between different batches of the same jeans produced during wartime due to shortages and rations.
These are an unsanforized aka "shrink-to-fit" denim. They will come in by about 10% during the first few washes, depending on the temperature of the water and how the jeans are dried. On average, this shrinkage amounts to approximately ~2 inches in the waist and ~3 inches in the inseam. Ooe have provided measurements for each size before and after washing to help inform sizing decisions, but be aware that exact post-wash measurements can vary depending on how the denim is washed and dried.
We suggest choosing two sizes larger than your measured waist for the best fit after washing. Wash with cold (for less shrinkage) or warm (for more shrinkage) water and hang dry.
