MotivMFG is headed by Samuel Wei, founder of Radiance Blue and the pioneer of the heritage market in China; and Daniel Gu, a third-generation tailor and designer. Together, they combine old-world tailoring (from various antique European manuals) with workwear production techniques. Constant research into garment production techniques around the world informs their design, with the goal of creating “recreations” rather than “reproductions”.
The design of these was inspired by the knitwear worn over the pressure suits of Soviet pilots during the middle of the century. Knit up with a relaxed and slouchy fit through the body, it features two zip shoulders for easy removal, and woven reinforcement through the chest and shoulders to prevent stretching. Motiv have also added two comfortable hand pockets for extra storage at the front.
The yarn for these utilizes a blend of wool, cotton, and linen, imbuing the finished knit with the strengths of all three materials. Featuring the comfort and insulation of wool, the 5-ply ribbed knit pattern is additionally soft and breathable (and not at all scratchy) thanks to the cotton and linen content.
