The 01-510 Golden Gate Denim represents our most in-depth collaboration with Ryo and Hiro Ooe to date. While we love their OAXX denim, we want to do something with a bit more heft to it, without compromising the vintage flat fades we love about that denim. The answer was to create our own denim for these jeans, the Golden Gate denim. After visiting several mills in Ibara City, we found one that was willing to work with us to produce just the right denim.

This denim is a 3x1 right hand twill, with #6 ring-spun warp and weft yarns. The warp is dyed with super dark pure indigo, and we increased the number of weft yarns to create a super hard denim. Both warp and weft are natural slub yarns to produce a vintage effect.

For the jeans, we started out with the OA01 cut, and detailed them out to match up with a pair of 1940's Levi’s from the OA archive. The coin pocket is bias cut, the wide belt loops are centered between the pockets and the fly, and side stitches are mismatched - one side is chain-stitched, one side is lock stitched, exactly as they were on the sample pair. It’s a funny little production mistake we thought was worth replicating as a reminder of the true nature of jeans.

These are unsanforized, so they will shrink with a hot soak. Our sample pair lost 2.75" in length and 2" in the waist with 2 hot soaks. We suggest +2 from your usual denim size.

Further details

Everyone’s got their perfect object that they chase. For one of us, long before the shop happened, it was seeking out the perfect pair of jeans. That led us down the inevitable road of Japanese denim, and into the horse-trading world of buying (and selling and swapping) online.

Over time, we learned more about the brand; and about Ryo and Hiro, as more details surfaced. They are true obsessives, also chasing the perfect object. It started with one pair made with a pattern from a cut-up pair of vintage 501s, and quickly escalated into a shop full of pre-1930s Union Special machines. These days, even their denim is made to order for them in Japan.

The word “craft” is tossed around quite a bit in our industry, often being distorted to cover even fully-automated factory production. Ooe Yofukuten couldn’t be farther from that - every garment is made by two pairs of hands, one at a time, all in their workshop in Aichi, Japan.

Many years after coming across that first pair, we are the first stockist of Ooe Yofukuten in the US, and we can’t be more pleased to have them join us.
