Since its founding 2001, designer Hiroki Nakamura's Visvim has built an extremely dedicated cult following. With a laser focus on crafting unique and high quality "future vintage" garments, Visvim has gained international acclaim over the past two decades for their unique perspective and exceptional design. Not limited strictly to workwear or couture, they produce Folkwear, inspired by regional and historical manufacturing techniques from mud-dyeing to crocheting, with collections that build off of each previous year and develop holistically, season after season.
Visvim’s leathers are some of their most impressive pieces. Beginning with the highest quality materials available, they’re cut and sewn in Italy with absolutely masterful precision. Visvim’s finishing processes vary, from nothing at all to some seriously involved distressing, with the Neu Riders Jacket falling on the more intensive side of that scale.
After finishing, each jacket is given a special washing treatment in Japan. As Visvim tells it, this process is very labor-intensive, but is designed to bring the leather to a perfectly broken-in stage right away, bypassing years of hard wear to soften and weather the hides just so, for an authentic vintage feel from the moment you put it on.
It’s made from an Italian vegetable tanned horsehide leather, with the feel of a 1930s Buco jacket that’s been properly worn in. The washing and weathering process that Visvim apply to the leather also distress the hides, developing scuffs, cracks, and peeling in the outer layers of dye – this wear is purely cosmetic and entirely deliberate. The whole jacket is trimmed with custom and specialty hardware – the shoulder epaulets feature vintage concho snaps, the pockets close up with custom chain zips, while the front and sleeves all have Visvim-branded Swiss Riri zippers, and even the buckle is completely custom. It’s inside features a smooth quilted lining that feels great on bare skin and slides easily over other fabrics, making it optimal whether or not you’re layering. Due to the complex finishing treatment and materials used, please keep in mind that no two of these jackets will be exactly alike, and each may feature different distressing and leather texture throughout.
