There’s a proliferation of made-in-Japan vulcanized sneakers lately, but most are being made up from stock components with a new label slapped on. The Real McCoy’s once again steps above the fray, and produces a perfect example of what appears to be a very simple product on the outside.

While these aren’t an exact reproduction of any particular military sneaker from the mid-20th century, they pull influences from those, along with styling cues from early Converse and Keds (among others). One touch is the date stamped inside the tongue - “18 DECEMBER 1944” - which is the day when Douglas MacArthur was made a five-star general in the US Army.

Every aspect of these sneakers is carefully considered, and custom for The Real McCoy’s, starting with the last. The toe bumpers, foxing, and outsole are all made from custom molds, and the canvas upper is woven just for these sneakers, delivering a sneaker that could be deadstock from an earlier time.

Naturally, that approach carries through to comfort on the foot, and we have to say, these are very comfortable indeed.

Fit is close to standard boot sizing, and on par with Converse. Contact us if you have questions about fitting them.

Further details

The Real McCoy's is a brand that one could say is the best Americana repro brand in the world, but that does not even begin to do justice to the level of detail or thought that goes into their products.

Nearly every single fabric, button, tag, and thread of these garments has been custom made to meet the spec of the original. In fact, when we first met with them, they told us the story of having a very specific thread recreated because it no longer was available.

While the fits have been updated a bit to blend with more modern wardrobes, everything else is exactly as it was. It just doesn't get better than this if you're looking for wearable artifacts of the early and mid-20th century.
