Warehouse & Co came about in 1995, as the final members of the Osaka 5, the collective responsible for driving the vintage and selvedge denim boom of the 1990s. Founded by former Evisu and Full Count employees, the twin brothers Kenji and Kenichi Shiotani, Warehouse is known for their meticulous detail and considered construction.
A much rarer piece of old Americana, these are based on WWII era cowboy jackets, originally produced by Lee. A unique blend of utilitarian need and war-shortage-based limitations, these are absolutely packed with interesting historical details (if you know what to look for). For those that aren't denim historians however, it's still a damn handsome and phenomenally well made jacket.
The fit is excellent, relaxed and roomy throughout, with an elongated body that will fit at a normal length even after shrinkage. The wide chest is great for layering under, though the lack of any adjustment on the body makes it more challenging to layer on top of. The armholes are cut high, but sit open and lead to full sleeves that taper comfortably to a fitted wrist.
The denim is special, custom developed by Warehouse to most accurately replicate vintage samples from their archives. Clocking in at 13.5oz (shrinking to 13.7oz after the first wash) this is a 100% cotton, 7x7 yarn count right hand twill, with a gray weft and white/gray selvedge ID. As an unsanforized fabric, the denim will change noticeably after the first wash, shrinking upward and inward and taking on a more vibrant color.
It features some interesting and highly accurate WWII details, like the "generic" star and wreath donut buttons, double needle stitching (in place of triple needle, due to thread rationing), and a rounded pocket (easier to sew). The usual cowboy jacket buckle back has been replaced by two long peats down each side of the back beneath the yoke - and that's about it.
As a special bonus, they come with a cotton "Victory Bag", a fun and historically relevant inclusion, as bags like this were distributed at various points during the war.
Runs slightly large, but will shrink to size after the first wash. Cold wash for less shrinkage, hot wash for more - hang dry either way.
