Where I grew up, in the UK, a jumper is what you would call a sweater. It’s taken me a while to adjust my terminology so that folks can understand me, and I still recall the look of befuddlement on my wife’s face when I ask her to open the boot - you call it a trunk - of the car once.

As such, every time I hear the name Jumper Shirt, for some reason I can’t help but think I’m going to see a button down collar and some flap pockets on a fabric that Rocky would have worked out in.

A slim fit, long-sleeved shirt, handmade in Los Angeles, the Jumper Shirt is constructed of This version is constructed of 8oz brown Japanese chambray, which has been indigo-dyed, and equipped with a single chest pocket, a double needle placket and double needle chain stitch seams with runoff detail.

Further details

In 2008, having learned the art of denim construction in Brian Kim’s small studio in Echo Park, Karl Thoennessen began a small operation based in LA’s American Rag, offering denim alterations and bespoke jeans to a small but loyal clientele.

As that clientele grew, so the brand that became Rogue Territory was born, named for the Rogues that inspired Karl’s love of denim - names like Brando, Dean (after whom the Stanton was originally to be named) and McQueen – and Karl’s belief that each pair of denims is the Territory of it’s owner, becoming marked with the creases, stains and holes that tell the story of the wearer.

By 2009, Rogue Territory was, as so many great American businesses are, being run out of it’s founders’ garage – with Karl’s wife Leslie taking on many of the logistical task involved in producing a full line of clothing - and their first capsule collection of ready-to-wear items made it’s debut in the fall of that year.

Today, Rogue Territory is a brand with a global reach and an ever-expanding line of garments, all of which stay true to the company’s ethos of producing timeless, detail-oriented clothing, and all of which is still manufactured in Los Angeles – and, yes, it’s all still being run out of Karl & Leslie’s garage, although that garage has since become a fully-fledged workshop and HQ.

Rogue Territory’s focus might best be described as modern workwear. The small touches on many of Rogue Territory’s garments offer a nod to the heritage that is inherent with American workwear – the chainstitch runoff on many of their workshirts is a prime example – just as you will find simple functional elements, such as the signature pen-pocket seen on so many of their pants, which was borne out of Karl’s near-constant searching for a pencil when sketching out designs.

Never content to simply follow the lead of others, Rogue Territory tends towards reimagining classics and adding their own unique vision to staple wardrobe pieces. Their Field Jacket, for example, whilst obviously sharing a little DNA with the classic M65, is very clearly a different beast. A trimmer cut, the raw nickel buttons and the pocket-within-pocket on the chest are just a few of the details that set it apart.

From the brand’s inception to the present day, Karl’s hands-on approach to every garment bearing Rogue Territory’s trademark hawk’s feather has allowed a level of quality to be maintained throughout the entire range and for the brand’s identity to grow and evolve, whilst staying true to their roots.
