Rocky Mountain Featherbed originally operated from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, between the 1960s & 1980s. Producing outdoor apparel and workwear, they were most famous for their one-piece leather western yokes, which were "inspired" by the leather capes worn by Indigenous Americans. Unfortunately, Rocky Mountain Featherbed was unable to survive the free market into modern times.
In 2005, the name Rocky Mountain Featherbed was purchased by the 35 SUMMERS (LTD) corporation in Japan, who sought to bring the label back to life. After years of careful study and multiple batches of prototypes, the new Rocky Mountain Featherbed managed to not only capture the essence and quality of the original garments, but also surpass it.
Rocky Mountain Featherbed down garments feature a 3-layer construction, with a thick, windproof and water-resistant nylon taffeta outer shell and lining, with 90/10 European down fill that has been treated for additional water resistance. "90/10" refers to the ratio of down to feathers, with 90% down fill and 10% feather fill - this is the highest possible ratio of down, ensuring the highest quality insulation.
The filling hits the perfect midweight, clocking in at 700 down fill power - a very respectable level, just shy of the upper limit of 900 (extremely warm) and well above the fill floor of 350 (pretty warm). Since this isn't a vest, it has two puffy sleeves, both of which end in adjustable elasticated cuffs.
The nylon shell has been reproduced with incredible attention to detail. Working backwards from vintage RMFB garments, the custom nylon taffeta is produced exclusively for Rocky Mountain Featherbed, to their exact specifications. The tightly woven fabric uses 260 individual threads to recreate the feel and water resistance of the original fabric without needing an acrylic coating.
It's finished with the signature one piece western yoke, made entirely from combination tanned cowhide. Custom RMFB DOT brass snaps close the whole thing up, same as the originals. The handwarmer pockets are split, allowing you to keep your hands and objects separate (because who can warm their hands with a pocket full of keys and loose change). Inside, a single zip pocket is tucked away for storing your most precious treasures.
