When you look at a vintage photo or painting of a street scene in Paris, it looks like everyone's wearing a suit. Banker, artist, produce dealer, baker, all in suits. What you cannot tease out from gazing back in time is the cloth each suit is cut from. The suits of the working class were made from hardy, tough textiles like this one, designed to look at least passible in the city while surviving the abuse of real labor.
The fabric is a new-old-stock striped cotton HBT in a desaturated gray-brown. Named "Le Marseillais" by the folks over at Mister Freedom, in honor of the French national anthem (of the same name). This 1940s-era stripe fabric pairs perfectly with the unstructured form of the jacket, and the high lapeled 4-button stance.
Moving on to the construction, this is a classic workwear sportcoat.
Inspired by a French work coat from the 1950s, the whole thing is cut trim and a little short, with a four button closure for a more old-school feel. Every seam is closed - no overlock or open edges to be found anywhere.
Given its unstructured silhouette, entirely closed-seam construction, and shape, the jacket folds & packs easily, making it a wonderful travel companion.Fits true to size. Dry clean recommended, or delicately hand wash with a mild detergent in cold water and then hang dry.
